Many were brought back from Japan by soldiers during the Vietnam War

"Yamaha was producing guitars in Nippon Gakki for years before their first "red label" exports. These are older, rarer, and built with the same quality craftsmanship of the red labels. Similarly, there are models produced in that time span, that were never exported. The FG-240 immediately comes to mind.

Yamaha started making guitars in 1941 in Hamamatsu, Japan - interrupted by WWII - then began in earnest in 1946. Originally part of the Piano R&D Division, they were given a dedicated space, known as the Yamaha Guitar Custom Shop - which is still in existence today. The early craftsmen had great woodworking skills, but knew little of the art of guitar making. They would for the next 50+ years learn from Spain's top Luthier's, who would travel to the Shop to teach them. They also learned a lot from US repair shops and have always been eager to learn from actual customers what they wanted, liked or disliked in their instruments
